The Allocation of New Students to New York City High Schools

A collaborative research project with Aaron Pallas (Teachers College and Sociology, Columbia University) and The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University to request data on and analyze the assignment of students to high schools in New York City.

The initial focus will be on determining whether students who enter the high school choice process for the first time are unequally distributed across schools - i.e., whether students with high needs (i.e., students living in poverty, students with special needs, English Language Learners) are being assigned disproportionately to struggling high schools. Eventually, we hope to expand the project to an examination of how the allocation process influences measured school performance.

We have received the data, and are currently performing the initial analyses.
