    The question of how schools can be reopened in ways that protect the health and safety of students, teachers and other adult staff is not only a challenging one, but one which is dynamic and changing, as we grapple with new developments such as regional outbreaks and rising incidences of COVID-19 related pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome. This webinar examined those challenges, discussed the current state of our knowledge on best practices and sound policies, and provided guidance to educators and policymakers on how to move forward under harrowing circumstances.   • HIGHER EDUCATION FUNDING: THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS

    Decades of tax cuts and government “rollbacks” have meant that most states’ public sectors, including state colleges and universities, have been systematically underfunded. The COVID19 crisis has brought this underfunding into sharper focus, as hospitals and public health systems strain under the pressure of budget shortfalls. State sector higher education systems, both those with affiliated medical schools and hospitals and those without, are now grappling to survive on state budgets allocations that are critically dependent on state and local sales and income taxes. This webinar looked at how we arrived here and the possible alternatives to austerity, in which already damaged economies will be further hurt by collapsing public sectors. Watch the video.
  • Panel on Coronavirus Pandemic and K-12 Education Funding

    In this newly released report, The Coronavirus Pandemic and K-12 Education Funding, using data from multiple sources, we describe the effects of previous recessions, particularly the Great Recession, on K-12 education finance, as well as the federal, state, and local policies and trends that mediated—for better or worse—the impact of these downturns on public school budgets. We then use these lessons to offer recommendations for short- and long-term responses to the current crisis. Bruce D. Baker, one on the principal authors of the report, along with Matthew Di Carlo, gave a brief overview of the report’s recommendations and then a distinguished panel of experts offered their responses and analyses.Watch the video and get the report here.
