Maria J. Stephan

Maria J. Stephan co-leads the Horizons Project and is a member of the Freedom Trainers. She is an award-winning author and organizer whose scholarship, public service, and work in civil society has focused on the role of nonviolent action and social movements in advancing human rights, freedom, and democracy in the US and globally. She has authored and edited five books, including the award-winning Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict; she formerly directed the Program on Nonviolent Action at the US Institute of Peace, and served in the US State Department.
