Has Teacher Quality Declined Over Time?

Comments

One thing we know for sure that has gotten worse is child poverty. And the correlation between SES and school performance exists in lock-step. You should mention this fact in every piece you write.

It is more than plausible that due to expanded opportunity for women in other occupations, fewer of them have been forced to compete for teaching jobs when they didn't have their hearts in it. Thus the teaching pool has improved. But we give short shrift to motivation. It's all about dry numbers and some stiff definition of competitive quality. Ironic when one considers the nature of the endeavor.
