More On What "Superman" Left Out


Diane (and all), I think the children served by public schools (both district and charter) deserve fair and complete analysis of data. A deeper dive into the full six year SEED journey (which by design and charter has only one starting point; middle school) via an apples-to-apples comparison would prove helpful to all. It may not bolster your argument but it may tell a fuller story. An aside, as the retention rates have improved the college matriculation numbers have remained higher than similar schools. The high school is now the largest it's ever been and the incoming middle school classes are also half of the stale numbers you quoted. Let's be fair to the children and families (as well as the committed and hard working staff) when we dissect school performance. Please. Barrett

With selective enrollment (disconnected parents don't get in a lottery)and an artificial learning system, it is amazing that students still have to be subtly pushed out of school. If it gets better, look out for other subtle ways of skimming.

Diane, I don't have the exact stats, but this has changed A LOT in recent years with new (really good) school leadership. Best, DAN

Diane, from what year is this data? SEED got a new head of school four years ago who has worked very hard to reduce their attrition. I'd be curious to see a chart tracking their attrition rate over the past decade - my guess is that today it's not nearly as bad as this chart shows.

This is the latest federal data. I hope that the attrition rate has been reduced. If so, that is good news. Diane

When you say latest, which school years do you mean?

Also because there is not any years on this particular graph, we could be only looking at just one years of data in which there is no direct relationship between seventh and twelth...

The graph is grade-by-grade enrollment in SEED in 2008-09. For the grades in the graph, during this time period, SEED only accepted students starting in seventh grade. That means that each grade in the graph represents a cohort of students who started in 7th grade. If the size of the incoming cohorts remains relatively stable each year, then the decline in enrollment between 7th and 12th grade reflects high attrition (rather than differences in the sizes of cohorts). Here is the 7th grade enrollment by year (from NCES): 2003-04: 130 2004-05: 145 2005-06: 140 2006-07: 145 2007-08: not available For example, the 12th graders in the graph are the students who entered SEED for the 2003-04 school year. There were 130 of them. By the time they reached 12th grade, there were fewer than 20. The vast majority of 12th grade students may have graduated, but that’s only because most of their cohort was gone by the time graduation rolled around.

"This level of attrition is alarming, and it makes any simple evaluation of SEED’s results impossible. " Actually, it makes evaluation of SEED's results quite easy: if you spend $35,000 per student, then base your graduation rate on only the top 20% of students, you create a wonderful illusion of success.

Be aware, too, that the recent New York Times magazine article on SEED made it clear that the attrition was due to expulsion, not just students choosing to leave. It's great if the attrition rate has been reduced, but the claims about successful college-entry rates are based on the years with the high attrition.
