The Real “Trouble” With Technology, Online Education And Learning

In the larger scheme of things, say historically speaking, personalized and large-scale education is not new. Distance education has a long tradition with both. One that has accommodated millions of people for whom "traditional" education has somehow not been an option. I work in the thick of the online boom. Putting courses online in a public institution. It's ethically challenging. The idea behind MOOCs is intriguing. I love it. Don't wanna do one though. Personalized systems are well....like all things technology and education, it's the hype not any reality that's the driver. Algorithms are you friends as long as you behave as expected. Stepford Wives? Anyway...As regards to MOOCS and personalized systems, think about the memorable learning experiences you've had. And to make it more difficult, confine it to "school", since schooling is what's really the chopping block in all of this. For me they've always involved a person; their attention, understanding, charm, patience, wisdom. It was a situation. A time, a place. It was above all an experience. Mr. Ower, my 6th grade teacher. Amazing. Education is a fundamentally human endeavor; it's also an experienced endeavor, and an embodied one at that. ICTs mediate our humanity and our experiences. And currently they constrain them to what we can see and hear on a screen. It's rather sensory-deprived. In LA nightclubs, photo booths are making a comeback.
