What Do We Do When Second Graders Think Math Is Not For Girls?

Comments

They say males have better "abstract thinking" than females (even 5-month old infant boys are better than girls at understanding object rotation: see Moore and Johnson, "Physical Rotation in Human Infants," Psychological Science, (19), 11, 2008, pp. 1063-1066.) while girls have superior language abilities than boys (see http://goo.gl/VlIyg). Could be true. But I'll tell you something: other factors being equivalent, for my engineering or research duties I would enroll a woman instinct and parallel processing abilities over a man who follows-the-procedures and excels at Excel. Every time. Juan Carlos---

Juan Carlos, Thank you for your comment. There is a lot of research on gender differences. Frankly, I am not as familiar with these explanations. Why? A lot of the times these issues are framed in terms of nature vs nurture but the truth is they cannot be separated. So I decide to focus on what can be changed, the social side of it. So, for example this paper on "physical rotation", I haven't read it yet and I am sure, like all research, is subject to criticism. But let's assume I buy into their argument. What might be the social consequences of the researchers' work? How will the non-research community read this study? The media loves these stories on difference. For starters I may help perpetuate existing stereotypes - e.g., men possess greater spacial skills. So, when (and if) our daughters choose a field of study requiring "spacial skills", we will all have these notions in the back of our heads. Will that help anybody? I don't think so. Stereotypes are powerful and can exaccerbate even small differences that may exist among people based on their genders, races, cultures. I suppose research on what makes us similar is far less exciting. Esther

Thanks Esther, Stereotypes feedback themselves. We believe we are so smart and yet are fooled so easily... (http://youarenotsosmart.com/) Your comment "I suppose research on what makes us similar is far less exciting." brought a sad face on me. Then again difference and diversity is a fertilizer for communities, be it gender, race or what not. Juan carlos---
